How do challenge grants work?

This grant is for projects that submit crowdfunding campaign proposals by Dec 23, 2016. The project that with the most backers after the first 3 weeks of the campaign will receive an additional $500 grant. Eligible projects must be approved before the launch deadline.

When will the grant be awarded?

On January 31st at 5PM PT, the prizes will be awarded according to the posted schedule.

Can I still submit a project?

We are no longer accepting projects for this grant, however we will be launching many more challenge grant opportunities. Sign up for our mailing list for up-to-date community news.

Please Note:

If we see suspicious acitivity of researchers or backers potentially cheating during the challenge, the project will be completely disqualified from winning the grant.

Challenge Aims

This challenge is to support research related to algae. We're interested in how algae produces oxygen for our planet, to how we can manipulate algae at the DNA level to produce drugs or energy, and everything in between. Below are some examples of topics we're interested in:

  • How can we algae to synthetically produce drugs?
  • Can we use algae as a sustainable energy source?
  • Can algae provide a sustainable food source for the future?
  • How do algae reproduce?
  • Identifying new species of algae
  • Do algae that live in extreme conditions have unique chemical properties?
  • How do algae provide ecosystems for other organisms?

Here are some example projects:

Fauna of the Floating Islands: a study of the floating seaweed, Sargassum

Making Inexpensive Insulin Using Microalgae

Are biofilms responsible for heavy metals on plastic debris?

Do invasive algae always make bad neighbors? Species-specific responses of corals to contact with invasive algae
