About This Project

Excessive game play for one session has not been empirically tested. MMORPG World of Warcraft gamers spend on average 3.3 hours per day gaming and action game enthusiasts often indulge in marathon gaming sessions lasting an entire day and or night without significant breaks. Therefore, this study will focus on the effects extended game play for one session may have on mental and physical wellbeing. This will help determine a critical period for harm during excessive gameplay.

What is the context of this research?

Over time, personal computers and the traditional arcade style machines have converged into what now can more accurately be described as the primary link to a household’s media center. Observed in iterations of the Sony PlayStation, Microsoft Xbox, and Nintendo Wii consoles, the advantages and ease for an individual to join an online multiplayer game any time of the day or night is evident.

What is the significance of this project?

Numerous risks of gaming have been documented which include addiction, aggressive behavior, and depression and anxiety (King, et al., 2013). Yet King, et al(2013) concluded that in many studies on the effects of game-play their limited gameplay time may have been insufficient to observe any discernible effects and asserted that 50 minutes was only considered to be normal game play not extended.

What are the goals of the project?

The goals of the project are to determine if 4 hours of extended first person shooter gameplay effects a person's ability to evaluate risk in the decisions they may make, their short term and working memory, reaction time and blood pressure. Since most avid gamers during local network game sessions play an entire night 4 hours is a good mark to determine an onset of potential harm. Prior studies in the literature have stopped at the 2 hour mark. The control group will play non violent video games that are less impactfull than first person shooters such as Forza Racing.

Budget items will help me to complete my dissertation research project. Equipment consists of the procurement of Xbox 360 consoles with controllers to test extended gameplay in a local area network game using system link for 10 research participants at a time for 4 hours. During this 4 hours to recreate the social factors of network gameplay food and drink will be provided such as pizza and soda the typical choice of avid gamers. Steps that will need to take place or milestones are that of pre testing for control and experiment participants. The second milestone is extended game play of a first person shooter. The last milestone is that of post testing immediately following extended gameplay. The budget will help in data collection for 120 participants; 60 control group and 60 experimental group.

I am really excited about this study for may reasons. Some of them, obviously, personal. However, I believe that this study, and possible future studies, will answer critical questions related to possible serious effects to cognitive development of our youth.
