What is the context of this research?

My research looks beyond the caricature of ganja smoking Rasta’s to ask how the religious tradition of Rastafari’s experience of oppression and poverty prompts insight into the religious imagination’s capacity to project hope through despair, or in the words of Rastafari, Chant Down Babylon! This project will analyze Rastafari verbal and visual material archived in the Carole Yawney collection at the Smithsonian Institution. York University ethnographer Carole Yawney’s extensive personal archive of field notes and multimedia materials are records of her 30 plus year conversation with Rastafari elder Mortimo Planno. Ras Planno is acknowledged as an important spiritual leader of Rastafari. In 1968 at the behest of Dr. Lamros Comitas, Planno produced an unpublished manuscript, The Earth’s Most Strangest Man: The Rastafarian detailing his understanding of the emerging Rastafari faith. This unpublished text provides an important, and as yet uninvestigated resource for understanding the early development of Rastafari while simultaneously providing a textual and visual guide to explore Dr. Yawney’s 30 plus year conversation with Ras Planno. From this research I hope to publish an annotated edition of Ras Planno’s text thus making his words and wisdom available to all those interested in overstanding Rastafari’s ethos of love and hope.
