Methods

Summary

A series of transect surveys (driving a set route) will be undertaken to find giraffe, photograph them, id, sex and estimate age (adult, sub adult, juvenile, newborn), note their gps location, foraging habits, interactions with other giraffe and other species, especially predators with and symbiotic relationships (where two species appear help each other, for example Oxpecker birds remove ticks from giraffe and eat them; this feeds the Oxpecker and rids the giraffe of a parasite). All giraffe encountered will form a population number, and be entered in the Giraffe Spotter online ID database for international records, as well forming a database for African Parks Network, Giraffe Conservation Foundation and my own project thesis and subsequent papers.

Challenges

Security is the main issue; both in general crime rates in Chad and more specifically from threat of poachers; these have been mitigated by African Parks management at Zakouma, having managed the poaching threat to undetectable levels since 2010, and providing me safe accommodation and armed guard from their ranger team.
