Methods

Summary

There are multiple layers to this study. We would like to include a larger group of students to participate in this study by completing a survey about family, community and self.

We would like to have a small group of these students participate in a one hour interview on these topics. The interviews are one to one sessions during which the students can talk openly about their story.

We will be able to connect this data to census data and will have community data from the youth perspective as well as from the census data.

Challenges

Past experiences informs us that the challenge is engaging the students to participate in the study. Providing a small stipend for each part of the study (10 dollars) goes a long way to encouraging students to be a part of the study.

Pre Analysis Plan

How do aspects of family socialization and community context relate to college adjustment?

We will use regression analyses to examine associations of family and community variables with college adjustment indicators.

How do Hmong American college students describe their families and college experiences?

We will use theory guided content analysis to examine themes evident in students' descriptions of their situated experiences during college. This will allow the youths' voices to convey their stories about what happens during college.
