About This Project

The Rwandan Project, was founded in July 2015 with the objective of collecting data on mental health in Rwanda. The project is currently in its infancy, but the end goal is to conduct cross-sectional, population-based, surveys in Rwanda with a multidisciplinary team. Currently, there is limited data in the literature in regards to mental health in this part of the world and even less mental health support available to the Rwandan population.

What is the context of this research?

The project will take place over a two-year period, and will ultimately lead to two separate data collection excursions to Rwanda. The first excursion will have for objective to assess the prevalence of depression, suicide behaviors and attitudes of participants towards mental health in general, in the province of Kigali. The scope of the second excursion will be broader and will have as an objective to collect data on mental health problems in the entirety of Rwanda via culturally sensitive surveys. The team plans on collaborating with both a Canadian Medical Faculty and a Rwandan based University.

This proposed research will be a valuable contribution to scholarship about mental health in Africa, specifically Rwanda. The project’s aims and goals address national concerns such as substance abuse, and depression. As such, it is well positioned to produce new, culturally sensitive information that can productively shape future policy regarding mental heath. In addition to medical literature, the social sciences more broadly will stand to benefit from the findings from this research.
