Can we engineer pancreatic beta cells to function properly and safely increase insulin production for diabetics?

Insulin in itself would not solve any problems. On the contrary, this project actually helps in rebuilding the beta cells ability to produce it and be able to fight off the autoimmune attacks by rewiring the mtDNA to work for the cell instead of against it. This would then, in turn, help in the cell's function in producing insulin and functioning properly as well as its ability to survive longer and create more efficient solely beta-cell islets that would help people at any stage of their diabetes, type 1 or 2. This is not because of a lack of insulin completely, but rather a disfuction of its producers and the effects from it.
