Meet the Team: Carson Frey

Undergraduate researcher Carson Frey

I am a proud local girl from Bluffton, South Carolina where my longtime dream has been to attend college and find a career that would allow me to help others in need. Currently I am a senior studying at the University of South Carolina Beaufort to achieve a bachelor's degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. I anticipate graduating at the end of spring 2024 and my plan is to then apply to a Physician's Assistant master’s program. By working on this Chagas’ disease early-stage drug discovery project, I am learning the scientific method and strengthening my hands-on skills in the laboratory. This is such a beneficial opportunity to help achieve my goals while giving back to others who are sick and in need of a potential alternative drug for this common tropical disease. I am proud to be a part of this research underneath the wisdom and supervision of Dr. D’Antonio.

About This Project

The etiological agent for Chagas' disease is the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which affects 6 - 7 million people primarily in Latin America. The chronic stage of infection causes cardiomyopathy and the enlargement of other organs resulting in disease burden and death. There is an urgent need to replace the clinical therapeutics (benznidazole & nifurtimox) and this proposal focuses on a compound screen to observe a hit expansion with the target T. cruzi glucokinase.
