About This Project

Data generated by people, corporate activity, and corporate exchanges is becoming increasingly important. The mass of information is growing exponentially. It leads managers to consider it as a corporate asset. Q: Who's in charge of bringing smooth and secure access to this corporate asset? We propose using data management structures to respond to the growing pool of data together with a Chief Data Officer (CDO) to advocate and manage them.

What is the context of this research?

  • A Chief Data Officer is not a Chief Information Officer
  • A CIO is too busy and not oriented enough on Business and strategic aspects.
  • Data is the fuel of companies in the Digital Revolution currently happening
  • Everybody is using and creating Data on a daily basis.
  • We want our data to be useful in a good way, not awkwardly used to send annoying commercial messages.
  • We want our suppliers, our sellers, our service providers to be more efficient and for them to bring us useful information.
  • Information is everywhere but it is such a pain to access it sometimes within an organisation, can someone fix it ?

What is the significance of this project?

  • 60% of companies, large and small, say they need to hire or are hiring a CDO or senior data leader.
  • 70+% of CDO roles were created within the last year. Five years ago, the role wasn’t widely known.
  • 66% of large enterprises have a senior data leader and 71% will do so soon.
  • Data is the fuel of companies, Shall we organise Data Procurement policies, Data refinery processes ?

What are the goals of the project?

  • Raise awareness on new capabilities offered when Data is properly managed
  • Produce a complete CDO role description
  • Raise information on the challenges and benefits of a CDO
  • Raise new problematics linked with the role: Big Data, Digital applications, social media

Working in IT project management for different kinds of organizations, I'm always shocked how difficult it is to get access to meaningful data.

Information is stuck in different silos even when the Information system is serving a single organization and a unique strategy.

As it is a brand new science, few individuals have deep knowledge and experience in it. That makes it difficult to access them, as their time is limited.

Conferences and summits are the best place to meet key Data management practitioners and to exchange information with actors of the digital revolution.

Interviews are needed so that I can present a strong argument, based on my findings, in order also to complete my Master’s thesis.
