Discovering Fossil Bison in MN

Today our journey begins to discover fossil Bison in Minnesota. Our first day of excavations at the Snake River Fossil Site start this afternoon. It will be my first chance to get out to the site and really get a good grasp of what is going on geologically. What will we discover at this exciting new site?? How far will we have to dig to find our first fossils? So many questions yet to answer!

The best part of starting a new field season is the opportunity to see old friends and make some new ones! I am stoked to be able to see my closest friends Jeff Martin and Rachel Short, both PhD students at Texas A&M. It is crazy to see someone only a couple times a year yet feel like you have never been apart.

Jeff Martin, Rachel Short, and Sharon Holte .... yup those are bison in the background! :)

Here's to finding some amazing Bison fossils!!!

About This Project

Mammoth Site scientists, partners, and volunteers are on a mission to understand climate change in the Black Hills during the latest Ice Age. To accomplish this, we are working together to rappel into and excavate a remote cave in the Black Hills of SD. Rapid deposition of sediments in this cave covered the remains of many different animals. These exciting new discoveries have provided us with snapshots of what the climate and environment was like thousands of years ago.
