5 giraffe treated so far with stem cells!

Mashama has received two treatments with stem cells, to help with his arthritis. While receiving the injection, his trainer stands on a tall ladder and rewards him for standing in place with his favorite treats (Romaine lettuce & crackers).

As part of our celebration of World Giraffe Day (June 21), we wanted to share some exciting updates on this project. Thanks to the research you helped make possible, five giraffe around the country have received stem cell therapy to help manage serious health conditions such as arthritis. This includes Cheyenne Mountain Zoo's giraffe Mahali (the 1st giraffe ever treated with stem cells) and Mashama, who both have arthritis. Mashama's case highlights the incredible training done at zoos, as he was trained to stand in place (no restraint, no drugs, free to walk away at any time) for slow infusions of cold stem cells into the jugular vein.

If you want to learn more about World Giraffe Day and some of the exciting things happening for giraffe care and conservation, please check out https://www.cmzoo.org/world-giraffe-day/ Thanks again for supporting our research and helping giraffe!

About This Project

Arthritis is common in geriatric giraffe. Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is uniquely suited to help find better arthritis treatments, as we have a large herd of 16 giraffe that are trained for voluntary blood draws. Funding this project would allow us to grow stem cells from giraffe blood samples and then use stem cell therapy for a geriatric giraffe. The giraffe will be monitored with bloodwork and thermal imaging to determine if stem cells can help decrease inflammation.
