Meeting Edwin

Last week we met with Edwin, and discussed the project in full detail. We cleared a few questions around the electronics board, and concluded that we will face two main challenges:

  1. In the short term, the piezoelectric actuators for the single-channel pipette will require adding a form of closed-loop control for accurate dispensing. We will also need to keep friction forces to a minimum.

  2. In the long term, the 96-channel pipette will require a very powerful supply, capable of delivering 150V AC and several Amps of current. Edwin has already shared a few implementation ideas and driver components.

Next steps:

  • Wait for the funds to become available.

  • Purchase a few piezoelectric actuators as samples, and the electronic components needed to reproduce Edwin's controller.

Stay tuned for more news :)

If you are interested in joining the fun, please contact us. We have a nice Discord group where we talk about lab automation. Might also be a great chance to practice your Spanish!

About This Project

We're studying how yeasts make decisions about their cellular fate during mating, a process that involves the integration of information with opposing effects.

To study how cells choose between mating and asexual reproduction, we observe and track single cells using automated time-course microscopy, over many different conditions.

To gain a deeper understanding of this process, we need a massive amount of data, and new open hardware tools, that also enable any lab to make these discoveries.
