Hey hey, we have great news! We will be able to match funds by 1:1!

We have great news for you! We just got confirmation that we will be able to match funds by 1:1. For every donated dollar we will receive 1 extra dollar sourced on external funding. We must get at least 5000 dollars to be sourced by crowdfunding, but we will have a nice opportunity to be back to our initial plan.

You probably are aware that, initially, the project was estimating to get 10 SMRT cells, this would correspond to around 70 gigabases of information, which would give us enough data to cover the genome 80X (well, technically it's 80X the haplome: feel free to ask us what the difference is in the discussions section of our page!). This level of coverage will allow us to fully understand the nature of any genomic transference (horizontal gene transfer) as well the potential genomic rearrangements and repeat elements for our beloved volcanic earthworm.

Unfortunately, we did not win the SMRT PacBio contest but now we have one more chance to fulfil our goal.

Please help the volcanic earthworm with your donation!

About This Project

We want to tell you a story that is over half a billion years old. The earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus is an animal that has evolved to live in an extraordinary environment, a volcanic geothermal field in Sao Miguel Island, one of the nine Islands in Azores Archipelago. By sequencing Pontoscolex’s genome we aim to reveal how this remarkable animal is able to live in the most challenging environmental conditions, such as high temperatures, acid soils, and an incredible low oxygen level.
