First Community Project Meeting at Genspace!

Group photo at Genspace for the First Community Project Meeting for Microbial Reef!

Wowowow! It was so great to see both new and familiar faces join us as community project members!

We started with introductions, a project overview, and went over our water sampling and DNA extraction plans for next week. I was inspired by the variety of backgrounds from architecture, software engineering, media production, and biotech who are all drawn together to learn more about our local waterways and its microbiome. Excited to learn and experiment with you all! :)

About This Project

This pilot project applies multi-omics to study microbial communities along our oyster reef at Bush Terminal Park. The goal is to observe changes in these communities' functional capacity due to oyster presence, and create a framework for community-led environmental DNA analysis of local waterways. In doing so, we will solidify a partnership between two community science programs with deep roots in NYC's Sunset Park, as well as New York Climate Exchange's anchor institution.

Blast off!
