Second Stretch Goal

Hope everyone is enjoying a good digestion this evening!

The word about Open Insulin has spread globally! We’ve had 6 websites mention our project including Vice Magazine, International Business Times, The Guardian, and Popular Science. This increased attention has brought more experts offering their assistance on the project, about a half-dozen new biochemists and synthetic biologists have gotten in touch with us so far.

The first stretch goal was intended to allow us to create two forms of the proinsulin construct. Now we're raising funds to research the steps to cut and fold proinsulin. This is the main work to be done, so we'll need to upgrade the capabilities of the lab a bit and continue work on getting our protocols fully documented and buy reagents and kits for each step. We've already begun inventorying reagents and ordering the ones we're missing. The main additional budget items so far are these:

  • Biosafety Level 2 facilities upgrade: ensure we can safely work with human cell lines for cell-based assays
  • human insulin and IGF-1 ELISA kits: these will let us test whether our insulin is folded correctly such that it is fully active, and ensure our product doesn't have unusually high activity at the IGF-1 receptor, which is similar to the insulin receptor
  • spectrophotometer: monitor our cell concentrations as we grow our cultures
  • cell-based insulin and IGF1R assays: alternative to ELISA kits

Meanwhile, we've only got just a little more than a week left in our campaign! Please continue to help us spread the word. The budget is still very tight so every little bit more we raise will help to enable a great deal more progress.

Sending this off to everyone I know, this is very very encouraging work you are doing. Good job!

OK guys with this stretch goal how far will we be from 'Open -Insulin'? How much more effort and funds will be needed to have it approved for use on humans?

We wrote a previous post about our projected timeline and budget for each step. https://experiment.com/u/AfKfog I should try and change the title to make it easier to find. As far as commercialization goes, we can't really fully anticipate that cost as we will need to partner with a generic company to do that.

Yes well 200k is not that impossible but most probably you should try to raise money on more popular platforms like Kickstarter. I have increased my pledge to help you reach 2nd stretch goal and I hope guys from this website will recognize and feature you on homepage. I saw some really mediocre projects featured I think it just discourage people from investing.

This first fundraiser on experiment.com was only intended to raise a small amount of funding for the initial proof of principle. We expect to be doing another, larger fundraiser once we have preliminary data to justify doing so.

Thanks so much for donating more and being so encouraging! I'll go try and talk to the experiment.com guys. I think they pushed us off the front page once we reached our first goal. Like Patrik said, we are hoping to raise enough to put our heads down and produce some solid scientific results. At that point both press and fundraising should be a lot easier.

Good to hear progress. A type 1 for 25 years and anything new is good.

About This Project

Counter Culture Labs

A team of biohackers is developing the first open source protocol to produce insulin simply and economically. Our work may serve as a basis for generic production of this life-saving drug and provide a firmer foundation for continued research into improved versions of insulin.
