We Did It!

We are very excited to announce that our team took first place in the "Animals with Super Powers" competition for the $1,500 grant! Thank you!

We are overwhelmed with your support and generosity to fund this project and to allow us to win this competition. Through your contributions we have exceeded both our primary fundraising goals and our "stretch" goals. This funding really opens the doors for the project and will help us to make an impact with our research, allowing us to buy new equipment, explore novel designs, and investigate new science.

We hope you have enjoyed learning about the amazing snapping shrimp. We are so grateful for the opportunity to share our research with you.

About This Project

Alpheus heterochaelis, better known as the Pistol Shrimp, possesses an over-sized claw that creates a cavitation bubble upon rapid closure underwater. The implosion of this bubble results in a shockwave and a flash of light, the former of which the shrimp uses to stun its prey. The goal of this experiment is to use high-speed imaging to study the implosion, and to apply the findings to the creation of novel water heating and purification technologies.
