An Article from the Antarctic Sun

Some of you may be curious about other aspects of our study or interested in learning more about the photogrammetric mass work we are starting. An article recently published in the United States Antarctic Program newspaper gives a wonderful overview of our study as well as a more in depth look at the work we have begun investigating the energetic investment of females during lactation. Author Michael Lucibella visited our camp this past field season to sit down with the crew and discuss the objectives of our study and our daily lives in the field.

About This Project

During the Antarctic summer female Weddell seals congregate in colonies along the Antarctic coastline to give birth to a pup, nursing it from body reserves. Advancements in 3D photogrammetry have provided a unique opportunity to quantify costs of reproduction for these females. Using mass measurements derived from photographs we can assess how Weddell seal mothers energetic investment changes with age. This will improve our knowledge of an important life history strategy of the Weddell seal.
