More
Sana Shafiuddin is a third-year nursing student at Illinois Wesleyan University. One of her passions includes advocating for culturally sensitive healthcare practice. As the opportunities present, Sana strives to learn about as many cultural backgrounds as she can. She is multilingual, is working on obtaining a Hispanic studies and health double minor, studied abroad, received an internship in Hong Kong, and has a significant experience working with the psychiatric population. Her goal in researching diverse populations is to provide quality patient care for patients of varying cultural backgrounds.
Over the last two years, Sana has consistently been involved in student-faculty research collaboration at Illinois Wesleyan University with efforts including exploration of avenues to advance hospital policy to include the growing diversity among healthcare professionals. Her current research focuses on healthcare leaders' perceptions towards Muslim healthcare providers with efforts of advancing hospital policies and procedures for Muslims who wear the hijab. Sana has conducted a thorough research literature review entitled Discrimination in Nursing in a Post 9/11 Society revealing limited publications regarding this topic.
Sana will present alongside Dr. Amanda Hopkins at the upcoming Midwest Nursing Research Society annual conference. In addition Dr. Hopkins' research team is awaiting decision from the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Research Congress conference in South Africa regarding submission of a peer-reviewed research abstract for oral presentation derived from Sana's literature review.
