A smart gear sensor system has been developed for the condition monitoring of a gear. This technique involves two components--a monitoring antenna and smart gear--and their associated electric circuits connected via magnetic coupling. The return loss of the monitoring antenna is measured and analyzed to ascertain the physical condition of the smart gear. Furthermore, the network analyzer measures the resonant return loss of the magnetic coupling system when it is switched between the smart gear and monitoring antenna in an experimental setting. As this coupling system is also affected by the speed of rotation, it's essential to evaluate both resonant coupling distance and phase fluctuation effect at high speed.
