Directing Creative Forces
Post-production is a dance of many fields. Editors, sound designers, VFX artists, and colourists all walk to the same beat, but each has their own steps. They are all working towards the same goal. It's a complicated dance that turns broken moments into a smooth, interesting story. Editors set the pace, creating story arcs and building tension or release. Colourists change the mood by utilising colour palettes that are based on psychology to change the emotional tone. Sound designers make immersive worlds by using spatial awareness and hidden signals. VFX teams create things that aren't real with amazing realism, effortlessly combining things that make you believe them. But the real genius is in how everything fits together. Every choice, from contrast to tempo, has to help the story and the emotions. The heart and soul of a movie are shown in post-production, not at the conclusion of its existence. Great post-production doesn't show off. It talks in a low voice. It pushes the viewer's emotions in the appropriate direction, sometimes without their even knowing it. That's what clever choreography can do.
