Computers in classrooms, 3-D printers, and digital content are a few of the ways that technology is impacting education in exciting and sometimes controversial ways. Technology is changing classroom pedagogy, standardized testing, teacher training, government initiatives, and students outcomes, among other things.

How this works

Challenge grants are prizes to supplement existing crowdfunding campaigns. We will accept proposals for campaigns related to technology in education, and all the campaigns will launch together on December 8th, 2016. After the fourth week of the campaigns, the project with the highest number of backers will receive an additional $500. There are two runners-up prizes of $200 each.

Challenge Aims

Computers have become a big part of daily life in schools, with US schools providing at least one computer for every five students. There’s a booming field of educational technology businesses who share an $8 billion yearly market, and who create and sell hardware, software, and online content to educational institutions. The federal government is funding and spearheading educational technology initiatives, such as making digital content and high-speed internet available to all schools. Also in US schools, more students now take standardized tests on computers than with paper and pencil.

Academic research into how technology is impacting education is also an exciting field. Some research looks at districts, schools, teachers, or classrooms who make exceptionally impactful and creative use of technology. However, there’s little evidence that shows technology and online content improves learning outcomes. There are worries about how technology might widen the achievement and access gaps in education and about students being distracted by too many digital stimuli.

We are calling for research proposals that look at any aspect of technology in education, not limited to the topics above. Twelve projects will be chosen to launch together in early December, and the three campaigns with the highest numbers of backers will receive extra awards on top of what they fundraise.
