Roadkill data points to capture for CROS entry
Please see the California Roadkill Observation System entry page for complete breakdown.
Data points needed for CROS are simple to gather, Ie.
GPS - Smart phone photos: Turn on Location Services so the photo contains GPS in the exif data. Regular camera photos: Note the location however is easiest for you. One way: The passenger can mark it on a map app by dropping a pin where you take the photo, and acquire the lat/long that way. 2nd way: note the location in proximity to the nearest exit by resetting the mile-counter on the dashboard once passing the carcass, then note how much it goes up by the time you get to the nearest exit. When you're in CROS, zoom into the map, find the exit, go back the distance logged on the mile-counter, drop your pin!
Species category, Species Type, Confidence level (You don't need to be 100% sure of what the furry mass is to enter it's presence on the road as a CROS entry. We understand sometimes the carcass is unrecognizable), Species type, Date Captured, Speed limit, Road Type - Dirt road / County Road / Interstate / State Highway, etc., Carcass Position - Center Divide / Shoulder / Median
