The Octopus Are Here!

Hi Everyone! The octopus hatchlings arrived last Thursday! They are tiny (about the size of a pencil eraser) and only about a week and a half old, but are already full of personality. Currently they are doing well and eating ghost shrimp.

I am ordering some fake aquarium plants to add to their aquariums to give them more hiding spots, as well as something vertical that may make them easier to spot during feedings.

I will be posting occasionally as they grow the next couple of months. In the meantime, enjoy these photos and the attached video of the hatchlings on day 1!

About This Project

Cephalopods and vertebrates have gone through similar circumstances that required adaptations such as learning and memory abilities. These skills are seen in some cephalopods which are able to solve mazes and navigate complex environments. The timing of this skill development in cephalopod evolution remains unknown. This project determines the spatial learning abilities of the O.bimaculoides by measuring recognition of habitats and pathway to the hidden food source.
