Day 11 and 12: To collect or not to collect.

2 days ago we poked around some outcrop and found a few sites with bone exposed. We set about exploring these sites, digging small pits to determine if the bone buried deeper would be worth the time it would take to collect it. One of the two sites was a bust, but the other has turned into something we're having trouble identifying. That is often a good sign, if you can't figure out what it is then hopefully it's interesting! The next day we returned to prospecting. Once again we summited great towers of sandstone to reach the outcrop. Though the exposures were excellent, the high winds made work difficult and we often lost track of one another. We did find one bone, but it was so infused with gypsum that it was not worth collecting. I found what I believe may be a partial dinosaur print but little else. Today we'll continue prospecting, hopefully we'll have better luck!

About This Project

The Late Cretaceous Almond Formation has been known to produce dinosaurs since 1937. Still, the fauna it preserves remains almost entirely unknown. In 2021 we found the first turtles, fish, and crocodylomorphs as well as several dinosaurs including hadrosaurids and the first ankylosaur from the formation. Our aim is return to the deposit and thoroughly document its ecosystem for the first time to inform future studies of dinosaur evolution and distribution.
