Welcoming our research assistants! part 2

I am pleased to introduce two of our undergraduate assistants for the project. Nadia, Mackenzie, and Brady have shown eagerness and a passion for science. They started on this project very recently and have already began to produce valuable data for us. We are excited to have them continue with us into next semester. See below for some more information about Brady:

Hi! I’m Brady Estrada, and I am currently a senior at Nova Southeastern University. I am a biology major with a marine biology minor, and plan on continuing my education next year to pursue a master’s degree in marine science. After being a competitive swimmer my entire life, I am excited to begin transitioning my love for the water into a love of studying the ocean. I am hoping that my involvement with this study will kickstart my career in this field and help me reach my end goal of being a professor at a university. I love the beach, mountains, and all things outdoors, but one of my favorite things to do is cook at home with my friends and family.

About This Project

Corals are bleaching at unprecedented rates due to global warming. The Caribbean has lost 70% of hard coral cover since the 1970s. However, some corals are more resilient to bleaching than others because they are associated with heat-tolerant symbiont algae. We want to examine coral-symbiont associations in the Caribbean to determine which corals in the community are most likely to survive future bleaching events and if these corals are in need of restoration.
