New Perk - Sketching for Scientists!

We can hardly believe that we've made it here. Our project to explore perceptions of scientists who Instagram is fully funded!

To end on a high note, we are offering one last perk for 5 individuals who pledge $100 or more today! For a $100 pledge, claim a training session with science communicator, illustrator and and consultant Bethann Garramon Merkle (@commnatural on Instagram)!

Drawing (even without training) can:

  • Help clarify what you know

  • Enhance research methodology

  • Improve value of student assessments

  • Enhance creativity and problem solving

  • Enhance communication efforts

  • There is even evidence that collaboration between scientists and artists may result in better science.

Despite the benefits of drawing science, we collectively avoid sketching because drawing has become art, and art (like science) has become specialized. But what if you knew drawing wasn't exclusively for the pros? After all, the curiosity, close observation, recording, and critical thinking required for drawing should seem quite familiar to any scientist or science teacher.

Despite research demonstrating how effective drawing can be for learning and for assessment, a lot of people avoid incorporating this powerful visualization tool into their research and outreach work because they themselves don’t draw. That is why Bethann Garramon Merkle teaches researchers how to incorporate sketching into data collection, publications, public engagement efforts, and teaching. She also teaches educators at all levels (K-12 + university level) how to facilitate sketching as a learning process for their students and as a means of assessing how students are synthesizing what they’re being taught. When training scientists to draw, she provides a basic foundation in sketching skills and then focuses on how non-artists can effectively utilize sketching or facilitate sketching for their students.

For #ScientistsWhoSelfie backers today, Bethann is offering a 1-hour "Sketching for Scientists" training (for up to 5 people) to be taught remotely (via Skype or a conferencing system). She'll take you through a toolkit that will ensure you have basic drawing capacity, and she'll adjust the final portion of the training to your choice of the following: sketching practice, teaching students to draw, or using student drawings as formal and informal assessment.

About This Project

U.S. adults see scientists as intelligent, but not always warm. This is a problem because people's perceptions of scientists' warmth influence their trust in scientific information. Could scientists be improving trust via social media? We will conduct experiments exploring whether scientists’ humanized Instagram posts influence viewers' perceptions of scientists' competence and warmth.

Help us reach our stretch goal! New perk: $600 (USD) pledge = Custom #SciArt to communicate your research!

Blast off!
