Day 12-Our last coring day-- Coring Lago Chirripo!
Today, we will core our last lake, Lago Chirripo. Another short sediment core will be extracted from this lake.
If we finish early, we will have a chance to visit the summit of Costa Rica (3820m a.s.l.)---Cerro Chirripo, after work.

However, we didn't expect that the bad weather comes so early. From the same site that we took picture yesterday, the Lago Chirripo is barely seen today because of the extremely dense fog.

We have no choice but hike down to the valley in fog.
Short video see here on youtube
Always watch out the slippery rocks. The slope is much steeper than we thought.
And closer
Almost there 快到了。
A better view of the surroundings
This is a pretty large and deep lake, as deep as 20 m. The short core extraction gonna be not easy. In the picture below, we are standing at the lake shore, and carefully checking corer, air boat and ropes for preparing coring work.
Dave and I paddle an air boat to lake center, short core has to be collected here. (view from lake center)
Moraine geomorphology at lake shore area. (view from lake center)

One more (view from lake center)
Coring is successful. But we forget to take a picture of the core, until we back to refugia and realize it....

Mark our success!

To celebrate our field work completion, we decide to hike to the highest point of Costa Rica---Cerro Chirripo.

There is a notebook stored in the metal box at the summit. Whoever successfully reaches at this summit can write down his/her name in the notebook to record this meaningful moment. I looked up the previous pages, and can't find a Chinese name, so maybe I am the first Chinese that arrives here!!!!

Dave writes down his name as well (Nicho doesn't since he has been here multiple times). He may be the first person whose family is Porinchu in the notebook.

OK! Let's head back to refugia and have a nice rest!
On the way back, we need to finish our last mission: make a detour to Lago Ditkebi and put back the heavy coring devices back to this site. Cover them with plastic tarp carefully. Tomorrow morning, 2 trained horses and their owners will come to pick up the devices and take them back to Nicho's house at foot of the mountain---the entrance of Chirripo National Park. We will see them there.
NOW we are all hungry and decide to have a little break at the site. Cup noodles are the best!!!

Then leave. Farewell, Lago Ditkebi.再见啦,Lago Ditkebi。
Back to refugia and back to work. Sectioning Chirripo short core! Still at 0.25cm interval.

3 hours‘ sectioning and bagging......finally done.

Last day at Crestones, sunset is breathtakingly beautiful, as always.
Tomorrow, we will hike down to Nicho's house at the foot of the mountain. The hiking-down may take me another 9.5 hours (maybe fewer). So I will feast myself tonight to prepare tomorrow's hard work. EAT EAT EAT!!!
