Day 11- Coring Lago Morrenas 3C 第十一天-去往Morrenas 3C湖采集短芯

The major mission to collect long sediment core from Ditkebi was done yesterday! Today we are heading to the second lake in the North for extracting a short core for later comparison work.

从Ditkebi湖采集沉积物长芯的主要任务昨日已经完成。今天我们将去往北边的第二个湖采集短芯，以备之后数据比较。

 

At Valle de los Conejos (Rabbit Valley), the E directs you to Lago Ditkebi and the N directs you to Valle de los Lagos and Valle de las Morrenas. So today, we go N.

在兔子山谷分路，向东去往Ditkebi湖，向北去往Lagos冰川湖群和Morrenas冰川湖群。所以今天，我们一路向北。

 

Roughly 1.5 hours' hiking, we pass Lago Chirripo (on the west side of the ridge), which is the 3rd lake we are going to core. But we will not core it until tomorrow. Our target lake today-Morrenas 3C-is another 30 min hiking down to the hill on the eastern side of the ridge.

大概走了1.5小时，我们路过了山脊西边的Chirripo湖（这是我们要去钻芯的第三个湖）。但是明天才去今天只是路过。我们今天的目标湖是Morrenas3C--还再有大概半个小时的路程，向山脊的东面向下到山谷的位置就是此湖了。

上图便是我们行径向Morrenas3C湖的路线，西边山脊下是我们明天的目标湖，东边山脊下是今天要采样的湖。

 

Let's get a closer look of Lago Chirripo. We will see it tmr even closer.

让我们给明天要采样的Chirripo湖来个近照。明天我们将与它更加亲密的接触。

 

Isn't it a fish lake? Maybe a Dory fish.觉不觉得这湖的形状,说不定还是一条多莉蓝带鱼。

 

OK! Here we come, the glacier lake valley---Valle de las Morrenas. Morrenas means moraine----these lakes were all formed due to glacial retreat hundreds of thousands of years ago, moraine can be found all over the place.

好的！我们来啦-Morrenas冰川湖群！Morrenas西班牙语指冰碛石的意思---这些冰川湖都是几万年前冰退形成的，冰碛随处可见。

Although we have seen the lake in distance, it is still far away. Keep walking. Cross streams.虽然已经远远地看到湖了，但真实距离还挺远的。于是继续跋山涉水。

 

Weather starts to go bad....we should be quick.天气又开始变糟了，我们得赶快。

 

Dense fog arrives at Mor3C at the same time that we arrives at the lake. So I can hardly get a full view of Lago Mor3C under such foggy situation.我们和大雾几乎同时到达湖岸。在浓雾的天气下，我几乎照不到Mor3C湖的全貌。

 

Good for us. Mor3C is not very deep (only 2 m) so extracting a short core is not that challenging. 41 cm lake sediment core get!!

不错哦。Mor3C并不是很深（只有两米），所以提取一根短芯还不算太难。41cm的湖底沉积物短芯get！！

After grabbing some food for lunch, we get back to work---sectioning this shore core sediment at 0.25 cm interval (very high resolution) in order to identify short-lived climate events.

迅速地吃了点东西当午饭就又开始工作了----给短芯切片（每0.25厘米一个样片）。如此高分辨率是为了去发现那些短显的气候现象/事件。

 

Sectioning is completed when sun sets. Time to sleep.
