Conferencing, family fun, and 3 days left!

The Sleep Conference in Denver was a success! I was able to speak with a number of incredible researchers and clinicians at my poster session, and learned a ton! I was able to present preliminary research on the topic that this experiment.com project is supporting. My findings are so exciting and incredibly promising for the next stage of this work!

After the conference I traveled to California for a wedding and to see family. I had an incredible time! I was also surrounded by children the whole weekend - my family in CA have a lot of kids... I mean a LOT of kids. One of my cousins just had twins (on top of 4 children she already had), and before that, another cousin had quadruplets (in addition to an adorable toddler)! And that doesn't include the three other cousins (from both sides of my family) I met up with out in CA with children!

Being around so many children, I was constantly reminded that sleep plays such a vital role in the every day of parenting, teaching, and supporting the development of a life. But in conversations with those who spend most waking (and sleeping) moments in the direct vicinity of one (or many) child(ren), I was also constantly reminded that there is simply not enough research on best practices for healthy sleep, or even on what IS healthy sleep for a child. Sleep is an area in which everyone has a strong, often controversial, opinion, but few of those opinions are scientifically supported, and even fewer are supported from a neuroscientific perspective. This project is a huge stepping stone to providing that scientific support.

Thank you to all of the people who have supported this project so far. I truly believe that this research is necessary and important. I am praying for a miracle in the final 3 days of this crowdfunding project! Please consider backing this research, and sharing this information with friends!

About This Project

While many might think it typical and healthy for a preschool child to take naps, in recent years, the preschool nap has been called into question. Preschool naps are being removed from the classroom to make time for additional directed learning, and some researchers have suggested that naps diminish nighttime sleep quality. However, my research has shown that this may not be true. I aim to better understand the function of the nap in preschoolers, and how the nap may influence nighttime sleep.
