Meet Grey Caballero

Grey Caballero is from Clarkton, NC. He is a sophomore Anthropology major at UNCW and an undergraduate research assistant working on the Inking of Immunity Project. According to Grey, “I became very interested in this project due to its focus on the way culture affects human biology. I hope to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for tattooing and body modification through this project. It will also provide me with invaluable experience as a researcher.”

We love working with students and helping them become our colleagues through doing the real work of anthropology. Welcome aboard, Grey!

About This Project

Our team studies cultural impacts on health, specifically those of tattooing on the immune system. We expand on our previous study that suggests tattooing may "inoculate" the immune system. Our research takes place among Polynesian tattooists, who retain some of the oldest and most extensive tattooing practices in the world. We will collect saliva samples from over 100 people receiving tattoos at the Northwest Tatau Festival to examine multiple immunological factors.

Blast off!
