West coast bathymetry data received...

Good news! The west coast bathymetry data has been received.

Although the island-wide data that we requested is not yet available, we are pleased to begin incorporating this new information into our survey design.

Print copy west coast bathymetry maps courtesy Montserrat Governor's Office.

Two areas of interest shown in the data and already marked on the navigational charts as shoal areas are as follows:

448m depth shown on chart 585 in approximate position as shown in the image below

Source: UKHO

490 depth 22km WSW of Roche’s Bluff shown on chart 585 in approximate position as shown in the image below

Source: UKHO

Both of these positions are approximate until we receive the full dataset and are able to validate it with the UKHO.

Stay tuned...

This is really cool! Is the data available publicly anywhere where we could poke around, or could it be made available?

About This Project

In a first for the island, a locally-led initiative will survey Montserrat's marine environment, to identify the presence/diversity of megafauna. While some monitoring of Montserrat's marine biodiversity has been carried out via fisheries landing surveys, information is limited, due to a lack of affordable tools and locally based scientific expertise. Using low-cost tools and cutting-edge analysis we aim to gather baseline data cost-effectively to inform ocean management.
