August 5, 2018 - Summer sampling completed

Great news. We collected sediment samples from our closed and open to fishing sites in the summer period. The weather window held up and the conditions were favorable for a 2-day expedition. We're processing the samples for DNA library prep and sequencing.

The Van Veen grab did its job once again.

Unknown object and marine snow visible.

Samples in extraction process.

The great opportunity for this year's sampling provides our team with a chance to compile additional data, which will increase the likelihood of observing seasonal and spatial patterns within the sanctuary ecosystem. An equally important objective is to use the microbial taxonomic characterization produced as a guide to further explore the potential for natural product discovery. There remains a need to understand and preserve the marine microbial habitat and to explore the bio-synthetic properties associated with this unique biodiversity to combat antibiotic resistance .

More to come as we continue onward to the Fall sampling and subsequent data analysis. Your support is much appreciated so thanks!

About This Project

This project will characterize the microbial community structure and biodiversity of marine sediment within a national marine sanctuary. An important goal includes identifying sites with the highest potential for harboring bacteria (e.g. Streptomyces) that may contain novel biosynthetic gene clusters for natural product discovery. Metagenomics sequencing will quantify species at sites open vs. closed to fishing to inform fisheries management.
