Data Collection Procedures

Yesterday I bought my plane ticket and reserved a rental car, and so did at least one of our research assistants. I'll be flying into Seattle/Tacoma on June 25 and stay till July 2. I'm flying in ahead of the tattoo festival to set things up, recruit and train research assistants, and hopefully meet the tattoo artists and begin acquiring their support and permission to recruit participants from among their clients.

Toward that end, we made a short video that walks through exactly what we'll be doing. This is so our research assistants, collaborators, and participants can visualize the process.

About This Project

Our team studies cultural impacts on health, specifically those of tattooing on the immune system. We expand on our previous study that suggests tattooing may "inoculate" the immune system. Our research takes place among Polynesian tattooists, who retain some of the oldest and most extensive tattooing practices in the world. We will collect saliva samples from over 100 people receiving tattoos at the Northwest Tatau Festival to examine multiple immunological factors.
