Meet one of the bionano dogs!

I wanted to share with you one of the participating dogs that has been sequenced as part of our preliminary efforts. This is Marla! She is a 1.5 year old English Sheepdog. She was selected to include in the study as she carries many of the mutations known to influence hypersociablity towards humans. And does she ever! She loves to meet people and soak up attention.

Now, my hope is to explore her full genome sequence relative to other dogs and wolves. This investigation will provide us with a deeper understanding of the genes that contribute towards social behavior in canines.

About This Project

My lab studies the genetic changes that promoted the domestication of dogs from wolves. We recently found a few genetic mutations that occur in both dogs and wolves that appear to increase their friendliness towards humans. I hypothesize that these genes harbor more mutations in dogs that further increase friendly behavior. To test this, we need to sequence nine canines. We have sequenced six, and the funding will go towards completing the remaining three sequences.

Blast off!
