Exploring the deep-sea for Ghost Sharks
The majority of Ghost shark species inhabit of the deepest parts of the ocean. Our new species of Ghost shark was collected during research expeditions near remote seamounts throughout the southern Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The specimens were recovered from 3,200 feet, but we suspect they occur deeper down to 8,000 feet.
Most of these seamounts remain isolated from human activity, however the Prince Edwards Islands, located 2,000 kilometers south of the African continent, are currently experiencing some fishing pressure from deep-sea fisheries. The impact human activities have on mysterious deep-sea fish like the Ghost shark are unknown, which is why is so important to discovery everything we can. Starting with a name!
