First 40 kākāpō sequenced!

Greetings amazing backers! We're pleased to announce that the first 40 kākāpō have been sequenced. The data created as part of the Kakapo 125 Project will be made available to all researchers working on not-for-profit projects. To register your interest in the dataset generated to-date please send a request to The Department of Conservation (DOC).

We will shortly begin sequencing the next 40. A list of the next 40 individuals will be posted here when finalized. Progress made to-date is a direct result of our successful crowdfunding campaign. A massive thanks to everyone who contributed!

About This Project

The goal of this project is to sequence the genome's of all 125 known living kākāpō. Please help us to save one of the world's most unique and endangered species by allowing us to obtain the detailed genetic information necessary to minimize the loss of genetic diversity, and optimise health and productivity in the existing population.

Blast off!
