Data Collected!

Hi everyone,

I wanted to send out a big thank you to everyone who helped fund my project! I was able to travel to both the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in D.C. and the Los Angeles Natural History Museum to finish collecting all the data I needed. I am now in the process of analyzing everything and I'll try to post some results once I have them!

In the meantime, here's a fun pinniped quiz for you! Which vertebrae belong to seals and which belong to sea lions?

About This Project

Is the fossil Allodesmus a seal or sea lion? Allodesmus lived in the Miocene period, about 10 million years ago. They were early pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and walruses) that shared the ocean with ancient whales and giant sharks. Since no one knows whether Allodesmus was a seal or sea lion, I will be comparing the fossilized skull and skeleton to those of modern day seals and sea lions to determine which it was.
