Is this Ampituna?

Google Earth has become an invaluable tool for archaeologists as we can cover a huge amount of territory by scrolling through the images and looking for anomalies that could be archaeological sites.  Using descriptions of the Ampituna's location I was able to locate an anomaly  in Google Earth which is a good candidate for being the site

You can see the anomaly in the red box the Google Earth image above.  Both of the people I know who have been to the site say that it is a walled settlement on a hilltop in between the Huanangue and Chancay Valleys.  The two dark lines inside of the box look very much like they could be two concentric walls.  Concentric walled forts are well known through the Andes particularly for the Early Intermediate Period (200-600 CE).  Some examples included Acaray in the Huaura Valley and Chanquillo in the Casma Valley.  However both of these sites, like the other known walled sites, are located within river valleys and it is very unusual to find such a site between valleys.  What could this site have been protecting?  Perhaps trade routes between the Chancay and Huanangue Valleys?  Only further study will let us know.

About This Project

Ampituna is a large, hilltop settlement rumored to be located between the Chancay and Huaura Valleys in Peru. The goal of this study is to find Ampituna and map it using a GPS and balloon imaging. This study is key for understanding how ancient groups moved and interacted between valleys and also will help local peoples gain a better sense of their histories.
