We brought a second chick to the research station!!
The nesting pair at the nest “Franz” hatched a second chick. It is 5 days younger than the first one, meaning that it has little to no chance of survival if we leave it in the nest. Fortunately, we checked the nest just a few hours after it finished hatching, exhausted but healthy. The little chick was still a bit wet but it already had some food in its crop! Even though it was a very rainy morning, the parents managed to feed both chicks. A good sign!
Because of the low chance of survival, we proceed with our protocol and took the first chick back to the research station and left the newly hatched chicks with its parents. The first chick is 5 days old today and is now staying in the station here with us, being fed every few hours by our dedicated team. He has learned quickly how to be hand-fed, his weight is great, and looks good. We are hoping that all will go well and that we will be able to get him back in to a nest within a few weeks so both he and his sibling fledge in to the forests of Tambopata.
