Project Update!

Over the last several months, while the Forsten's Tortoises have been busy enjoying their hibiscus, we have been busy applying for the additional funding needed for the project.  We are happy to report that to date we have received grants from OKC Zoo Conservation Action Now Small Grant Program and The Mohamed bin Zayed Conservation Fund. Combined with the funds that you all have contributed, we are getting closer to our goal!  We also wanted to say a special thank you to Holohil for being a major supporter of our project going forward.  Also a shout out to Billy Tu to thank him for donating a digital camera to use for identification photos at one of our field sites…thanks so much Billy!  We will continue to keep you all updated as the project progresses.

About This Project

Sulawesi, Indonesia, is home to many species found nowhere else on Earth. Although rich in biodiversity, Sulawesi has only two endemic turtles: the Endangered Forsten's Tortoise and the Critically Endangered Sulawesi Forest Turtle. We propose to conduct surveys to determine current population sizes and distributions of these turtles, initiating a long-term project to support turtle conservation, graduate research education, citizen science, capacity building, and community-based awareness.
