Health Effects Registry

Concern about oil and gas development in your "backyard" is not least about real or perceived health effects from air or water pollution. If you think you may be affected by air pollution, our measurements can provide insights in how likely that is. In addition, if you, or somebody you know think they have symptoms that may be related to air pollution, they can get registered with the Environmental Health Project Shale Gas & Oil Health Registry & Resource Network, thereby helping research. This can not only help public health researchers with figuring out what the most common health effects are, making links between exposure (cause) and its effects, it may also provide those affected with some guidance on what to expect, what the risks are, or how to avoid exposure.

About This Project

Oil and gas exploration in shale areas, known as fracking, has led to large increases in hydrocarbon air toxics emissions in typically rural landscapes with little to no air quality monitoring. We plan to work with outreach personnel from an environmental NGO to supply volunteers in selected areas with passive sampling cartridges to monitor weekly average exposure to selected hydrocarbon air toxics. Samples are analyzed using gas chromatography, and data is provided weekly and shared broadly.
