Home Stretch
Six days left on this 45 day campaign! It's been a true learning experience in many ways.
I refined ways to communicate vital research in understandable, less technical terms, reducing jargon and making the questions, methods and goals as clear as possible.
I have been able to use the success of this campaign to leverage other funding sources. Many grant making organizations want to know that researchers have multiple funding sources. While crowd funding for science is a relatively new approach, the fact that I was able to get the support of more than 40 private backers shows that I want my research to have broader impacts.
The project reinforces the community spirit of science, an area of human endeavor that is available to all. If I had the funds, I would bring a dozen non-scientists with me into the field every time, just so we could get to know the way research is actually done and the wild, woolly, unexpected and exciting realities of field work.
Those are just three of the ways that running the campaign has supported my research process, completely unrelated to direct financial support. Financial support is excellent also— a new pair of Moab's is obviously in the offing, for example.
