An Island Album, part one

A few pics of the study site and its sere beauty, from the field work last May. I had the opportunity to be on the islands for an extended time. Last May marked the 8th season of field work in the region since 2014. Much of this field work has been supported by the Cactus and Succulent Society of America and the San Diego Cactus and Succulent Society.

A view to the south from the highest point on Isla Magdalena, at about 600 m

The southern rocky shelf of Isla Magdalena, with a view of Isla Santa Margarita in the distance.

A small plant of Cochemiea halei, probably not yet sexually mature, but possibly as old as 20 years. They grow very slowly but are strongly persistent once established.

A typical example of a slope that gets bathed in fog almost daily, with nine older Cochemiea halei visible among the lichen-colonized rock

On the northern end of Isla Magdalena, looking out to the Pacific from the hills.

Really good work you are doing, but it's your sense of humor(Debra Valov often shares your posts) that provokes me to want to friend you. Shall we?

About This Project

I am developing and applying innovative population genetics data analysis with habitat suitability modeling to solve longstanding challenges in the effort to save endangered plant species. Combining high throughput RADseq data analysis with species distribution models, I am exploring relatively inexpensive, feasible methods to generate powerful population viability assessments, estimates of threshold population size and the constraints on the habitats of rare plants.
