Being born and raised by the beach in Miami Florida exposed me to a whole different world. I was accepted into a Marine Magnet Program in high school, where I studied marine biology for four years. From the program, I realized that my two passions were marine animals and conservation. During my fourth year, I realized that I had a bigger passion for veterinary medicine rather than marine biology. However, since I still had had a huge passion for the ocean, I wanted to combine my interest and become a marine mammal veterinarian and work with rehabilitated and rescued animals.
Moving to Hawaii, I’ve only had one interaction with a monk seal after four years of living on the island. One thing I learned in high school was that, not a lot of people are aware of how much humans negatively impact our oceans and the animals that inhabit it. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is a critically endangered species. Teaching the public how important these animals are to the world will help us move one step closer to saving this species.
