One of mine too! They are a fascinating taxonomic group and in many ways, are bio-indicators of ecosystem health. Concurrent with global climate change, a greater understanding of factors (e.g., infection with parasites by northward range expansion of southern flying squirrels) that may be contributing to range constriction in northern flying squirrels may aid in geographic prioritization of flying squirrel conservation efforts, particularly across fragmented Midwest landscapes.
