(having trouble with the image??) Any significant variation in hardness between the stone types / samples? As I had mentioned privately, there is more to making a 'good' steel that allows for useful spark creation than meets the casual eye. Knowing the hardness of the stone is certain to relate back to the alloy (carbon content), effective heat treating used , quality of the iron used in the steel pair of these sparking sets. The indication of wider occupation over the site at single time points extremely interesting. This likely to relate back directly to population management back at the Greenland colony as well. From simple things come larger possibilities to insights! (Darrell)

I had met Kevin and Michele (separately) at the 'Viking Millennium' conference in 2000, and had a small part in bringing them (literally) to the same table. I have worked on a number of projects with them both in the years since. I have great respect for their knowledge, experience - and importantly - enthusiasm.
