Dr. Morowitz is a board-certified general and thoracic pediatric surgeon who regularly cares for hospitalized premature infants. In addition to his concentrated focus on the gut microbiome and metagenomics , he has a clinical focus on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Dr. Morowitz has developed an expertise in the culture-independent evaluation of intestinal microbes present in biologic specimens collected from hospitalized infants, children and adults. His laboratory has been funded by the NIH since 2011.
