Are E-Cigarettes a Safe Alternative to Smoking?
View comment
Hi Harjeet, thanks for your interest. Six participants are being recruited for the study. We are using a within-subjects design, so participants will serve as their own controls. Throughout the study, participants will submit breath carbon monoxide samples twice daily via our study website. These samples will be collected during baseline (up to 6 days before they start using an electronic cigarette) and as they use their e-cigarettes during the four weeks that follow. A major strength of this design is that less participants are necessary to demonstrate experimental control (i.e., we can be sure that any changes in smoking are a result of using the electronic cigarette). Good experimental control would be evident if baseline carbon monoxide samples are consistent, and changes in carbon monoxide levels occur when, and only when, the participant is given instructions to begin using the electronic cigarette. Additionally, this study will serve as a pilot for future researching involving more participants. The e-cigarette we are using in the current study is the Smokio electronic cigarette. This e-cigarette syncs with a smartphone app via bluetooth and tracks the time, duration, and intensity of each inhale the user takes. If you have any other questions, I am more than happy to share! You can also contact me at my e-mail: SMartner2@ufl.edu. We are incredibly excited about this project and are glad to see that others such as yourself are interested as well.
