Methods

Summary

Our project aims to sample small remote streams using discrete sampling and trawl net procedures. When adequate flow is present paddle trawling (https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969719361741) will be employed. On smaller headwater streams we will employ discrete sampling methods.

Challenges

When sampling for microplastics one major challenge is minimizing sample contamination. Clothes and sampling equipment will be carefully chosen to ensure microplastic contamination isn't introduced during sampling. Stream flow in these remote streams is intermittent. So we will monitor weather patterns and flow regimes to ensure we plan the sampling activities at times when the sufficient flow is present.

Pre Analysis Plan

Our project seeks to determine if microplastics are present in remote streams. The streams included in our project are extremely remote and should be unimpacted by humans. As noted previously, it is hypothesized that MPs are transported in the air, so our project seeks to sample these areas to assist in the assessment of the viability of aeolian transport mechanisms. Prior to sampling events, we will study maps, stream flow, and air dispersion models to determine sample locations in these remote headwater areas.
