Dr. Gonzalez has more than two decades of research experience and unparalleled drive to understand and mitigate the effects of dementia and Alzeimerās disease. The impacts of this disease to her family only serve to drive her personal passion to improve the understanding and ultimately improve the conditions to so many people who have been affected with this disease.
As a documentary filmmaker, one of my projects entitled "The 5th Dementia", profiled a band made up of singers and musicians with Alzheimer's, Dementia and Parkinson's. The concept behind the film is that music is medicine for minds with neurodegenerative disease. Throughout filming, Aidyl was a constant source of information and support. Her connection to Alzheimer's (the women in her family) has compelled her research for a cure. Her work with worms (not the technical term) is ground breaking. I highly endorse this project.
Dr. Aidyl Gonzalez is a passionate biologist whose own familial genetic history with dementia is one of the reasons for the need and immediacy of this research. Utilizing worms as a model organism, Dr. G will be studying how microgravity might modify abnormal levels of amyloid beta (or tau) alpha-synuclein, TDP-43 proteins and/or affect blood clots in vascular dementia. This pursuit is worthy of support as it holds the potential to unlock new therapeutic avenues in the mitigation of one of the most egregious neurological diseases.
